In this blog post, I’ll share some of my own food photography goals and resolutions for 2024. I hope these will inspire you to create your own photography-related objectives and embark on a fulfilling journey of creativity and improvement for the year ahead.

1. Mastering New Techniques

Oh boy, do I have a yearning to level up my photography game! My first goal for this year is all about mastering new techniques. You see, in the world of food photography, there’s always something new to learn. Whether it’s the intricate dance of lighting, or exploring unconventional angles that bring dishes to life, I’m diving deep into the world of experimentation.

As photographers, we’re like chefs in our own right, constantly refining our skills to create the most delectable visual feasts. And just like a chef explores new ingredients and cooking methods, I want to explore new tools and techniques that will take my photography to the next level. It’s all about that ‘a-ha’ moment when you discover a new trick or approach that transforms your work.

So, what’s on my list? Well, I’ve always been fascinated by the play of natural light in photography. This year, I plan to hone my craft into the art of mastering different lighting setups – from soft, diffused light that bathes your subject in a gentle glow to dramatic, directional light that adds depth and drama. Each lighting technique can dramatically change the mood and impact of your photos.

And then there’s the matter of angles and compositions! 2024 is the year I embrace the unexpected, experimenting with perspectives that I’ve never explored before. Sometimes, a bird’s-eye view can reveal a whole new world of textures and colours, while a low-angle shot can make even the simplest dish look regal.

2. Establish My Own Studio Space

Picture this: a space dedicated solely to your craft, a canvas waiting to be filled with mouthwatering creations. That’s what I envision when I think of having my very own photography studio space. No more improvising with living room setups or kitchen table shoots! This year, I’m committed to finding the perfect space where I can unleash my creativity without worrying about the mess or the clock ticking.

Having a dedicated studio space is like having a secret ingredient that elevates your photography to the next level. It’s a place where you can control every aspect of the shoot, from the lighting to the props, without any distractions. Imagine the freedom and endless possibilities a dedicated studio would offer!

Now, I know what you might be thinking – setting up a studio can be daunting and expensive. But trust me, it’s a long-term investment in your business. I’m starting small, but aiming to dream big! And cannot wait to have my very own studio space in the heart of the Manchester Food Photographer scene. You don’t need a fancy space to create stunning food photography – just a dash of creativity and a sprinkle of determination, alongside something practical, that’s what I’m aiming to offer my clients in 2024!

3. Collaborating with Chefs and Food Stylists

You know what they say, teamwork makes the dream work! In 2024, I’m setting a goal to collaborate more with different chefs and food stylists. These culinary wizards and creative food artists can bring a whole new dimension to our work. Together, we can create stunning visuals that not only look delectable but also tell a compelling story.

Collaborations are like a fusion of flavours in a dish – they add depth, complexity, and excitement.

When you work with a food stylist, you get access to their culinary expertise, which means you can create dishes that look amazing but not only that! You’re tapping into a world of creativity and attention to detail that can take your photos to a whole new level.

Imagine the possibilities! Collaborations also provide a valuable opportunity for learning and networking. You can pick up tips and tricks from chefs and food stylists, expanding your knowledge and skillset. Plus, working with other professionals in the industry can open doors to exciting new projects and opportunities.

4. Regularly Updating My Portfolio and Website

In the digital age, our online presence is our calling card. So, this year, I’m determined to keep my portfolio and website fresh and enticing. Regular updates will showcase my growth as a food photographer and keep potential clients intrigued. Who knows, the next big opportunity might just be a click away!

Your portfolio is like a curated menu of your best work – it’s what clients and collaborators see first when they visit your website. So, it’s essential to keep it up to date. I’ve set a goal to add new, high-quality images to my portfolio on a regular basis. This means constantly pushing myself to create better and more captivating photos.

Updating my website is also on my to-do list. I want to make sure that my site not only showcases my work but also tells my story as a food photographer. It’s a chance to connect with my audience on a personal level and share the journey behind each photo. After all, every image has a story, and I want to make sure those stories are heard.

But here’s the thing – updating your portfolio and website isn’t just about showcasing your work. It’s also about showing your growth and evolution as a photographer. It’s about telling potential clients that you’re always striving to improve and that you’re committed to delivering the best possible results.

5. Never Get Complacent

Ah, the dreaded comfort zone. It’s a cozy place, no doubt, but it’s also where creativity often goes to hibernate. This year, I’m making a pact with myself to never get too comfortable. I’ll constantly seek new challenges, different cuisines, and innovative styles. Remember, complacency is the enemy of progress, and our artistic souls thrive on the thrill of exploration!

Staying in your comfort zone is like cooking the same dish over and over again. It might be delicious, but eventually, it gets boring. The same applies to photography. If you keep shooting the same subjects in the same way, you’ll find yourself in a creative rut.

So, how do you avoid complacency? It’s all about pushing your boundaries and trying new things. Challenge yourself to photograph dishes you’ve never tried before. Venture beyond your culinary comfort zone and experiment with unfamiliar ingredients, textures, and flavours. You never know what might spark your next great photo!

Remember that every photograph you take is an opportunity to learn and grow. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; they often lead to breakthroughs. Seek inspiration from the world around you, and never underestimate the power of a supportive community of fellow photographers who can provide fresh perspectives and constructive feedback.

In conclusion, let’s embrace the challenges and opportunities that 2024 brings. As we set our goals and pursue our passions, may we find inspiration in every dish, beauty in every frame, and growth in every click of the shutter.

Here’s to a year filled with delicious discoveries, creative exploration, and the joy of never standing still. I aim to make sure I’m always moving forward, what’re you aiming for?

All the best for 2024,
Georgie xo
